Milos: May 2018
I spent around 5 days on the beautiful Cycladic Island of Milos with a couple of friends. My mission was to find the best beaches on the Island which I definitely found! So here is my guide to the best beaches in Milos.
Without further adieu here are my favourite beaches in Milos!
1. Kleftiko Caves
The first day we took a full day boat trip to the Kleftiko Caves, which are only accessible by boat. This technically isn’t a beach but it was amazing.
My number 1 favourite thing to do in life is be on a boat in Europe! We sailed all around the Island, stopping off each way to see different caves and rock formations and spent a few hours enjoying the bay where Kleftiko Caves are.
There were only a handful of other boats there as it was shoulder season and we got a good price on the boat. In peak season apparently, the place is rammed with boats! Also, note that the Island can get very windy so the boats may not be able to run every day.
2. The fishing village of Firopotamas
Firopotamas beach is in a small fishing village near Adamantas. It is beautiful and so classic for a Greek Island. The beach is set against dramatic cliffs and the village is right on the beach. We loved it here so much we came back twice!
3. Sarakiniko beach
Sarakiniko beach is probably the most famous beach on Milos Island. It feels like you are walking on the moon.
There is a little beach to lie on and plenty of rocks to climb and jump off! It is really stunning and unforgettable. Don’t miss it!
4. Papafragas Beach
Papafragas beach is close to the small village of Pollonia. It is a small cove wedged between beautiful cliffs. You have to climb down a little to get to the beach. You can swim out and under the cliffs to find caves!
5. Fyriplaka Beach
Fyriplaka beach is on the less sheltered south side of the Island and requires a bit of a drive! The landscape is dramatic with big red and orange volcanic cliffs dropping into the blue ocean. You can even swim in some surf here!
6. Tsigrado Beach
Tsigrado beach is just next to Fyriplaka beach. To get to the beach it requires a descent down some steep rocks using a rope which is a fun adventure that is rewarded!
My favourite spots were Firopotama, Papafragas and Sarakiniko because they are more sheltered and secluded!
Tips for Milos
Visit during shoulder season
I recommend making your visit to the Greek Islands in May or September on either side of peak season. The weather is perfect and not too hot, there are way fewer crowds and everything is a lot cheaper. There are still enough people still there to give the islands an amazing vibe during the shoulder season.
Getting there and around
We caught a ferry from Santorini, it was extremely early in the morning and unbelievably slow but it was cheap so what to do!
If you are visiting Milos as part of an Island Hopping trip, plan your itinerary carefully in line with the ferry schedule and book in advance. It takes quite a lot of coordination to ensure there are routes & ferries operating on the right days for your trip to work out!
To get around Milos you have to hire a car, there are no local buses. There are many places you can hire from on the island for around 30 euros per day. It’s much easier to find a car if you drive a manual! Also make sure you have an international drivers licence as this is what the law in Greece requires so if you don’t have one and get in an accident your travel insurance with be void.
Accommodation
We spent the first few days staying in the cutest apartment in the main town of Adamantas, called Seaside Apartments. It was run by an older Greek couple who showed us the most beautiful hospitality I encountered in Greece.
They brought us food every day, drove us to different places on the Island and even invited us to a Greek wedding where their daughter was the Maid of Honour. Wow, what an experience that was!
The rest of the time of the Island we spent staying in another 2 bedroom apartment (the luxury!!), closer to the smaller Cycladic sunset town of Plaka. Plaka has the classic Cycladic streets, white churches and famous Greek sunsets.
Restaurants on Milos Island
In terms of Greek food on the island the best we had was at O! Hamos!, incredible salads and stews and the best fava I had over the entire trip. The seaside restaurants in the small town of Pollonia are gorgeous, its the perfect place to stay for a more high end experience. Other then that we didn’t really eat out too much, we preferred to make overnight oats to take on the road and cook our own Greek inspired creations in our apartment!
Withdrawing Cash and paying by card
You can withdraw cash easily from Adamantas. A number of shops also accept card but for paying for small things in shops and restaurants it’s much better to carry cash

Overall I thought Milos was spectacular. It ticked all my Greek Island boxes and felt like more of an authentic Greek experience as opposed to the other more touristic and party Islands. The beaches, the ocean, the fava, and the people left me with a warm greek heart!
